Smart meters cost $450 each

Graeme Purches of Trust Power says a brand new analogue meter costs around NZ$40 (forty dollars)

However, he says a new smart meter costs around NZ$450 (four hundred and fifty dollars)

In New Zealand we have 1.65 million private dwellings – this figure does not include business premises, factories or offices.

To keep it simple, let’s assume that just one million properties in New Zealand are scheduled to have their analogue meter replaced with a smart meter.

Why would any company want to spend $450 million when it could spend $40 million?
